History

Richard and I found out we were pregnant (really just me, but we are the parents) on November 7, 2008. We were headed the next day to the Outer Banks in North Carolina to run a half marathon and spend time with my family. Being the excited newly pregnant couple we were, we told all of our parents about 2 hours after we took the 5 pregnancy tests it took to convince us that the lines were true. For those of you who feel the need to ask, "was it planned", it was not a surprise to us.

We then embarked on finding the doc that would deliver our "baby". We found one we liked and were set to confirm our pregnancy on December 3, 2008. All of our parents could barely contain themselves (and neither could we), they were so excited. Per our calculations, I would be 9 weeks pregnant so rather than doing a blood test, my ob did an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy. After messing around on the machine for a few minutes, the ultrasound tech became very quiet and turned the screen away from us. My first thought was, oh no, something is not right. So I asked, "is there really a baby in there." She replied there was indeed a baby. Not knowing much about what embryo's look like, when the ultrasound tech turned the screen to face us, I immediately thought I was looking at our baby's two very enlarged eyes. I am sure my husband (a medical student) knew immediately, but he didn't have time to break the news. The next thing out of her mouth was, "Actually, there are two babies in there." What!? How could I have two babies! Richard, is a fraternal twin so he was doing the happy dance while I was simply going into shock. Anyway, his excitement definitely was infectious and after the initial shock wore off, I became excited too.

I had a little sickness in the first tri-mester, but nothing I couldn't handle. Other than that things have been mostly good with the pregnancy. A few scares here and there, but I think that is normal for most first timers. We are now at the 22 week mark (they changed my "due date" at that Dec 3rd appointment to a later date noting by the size of the embryo's I was only 7 weeks along, not 9 weeks) and trying to figure out what the heck we need before these babies come.

I have mainly started this blog, so that my family (and friends who are interested) can follow along. The pictures above are of me at 20 weeks (colored shirt) and me at 22 weeks (all black). I will add some ultrasound pictures next week as we go back to the doc this week for a check-up.
